Seonamsa Temple

Celebrating 25 Years of tour excellence

Seonamsa Temple, built in the 6th century, is a tranquil and serene Buddhist temple and place of meditation, seated at the west end of Mt. Jogyesan. Home to South Korea’s most beautiful arched stone bridge, the UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts a history of almost 1500 years.

The majestic grandeur and authenticity of the Seonamsa Temple is only part of the attraction. The impressive complex resembling a rural village has been often referred to as "a little town deep inside a mountain”. The temple grounds consist of approximately 20 buildings, 4 temples and 2 bridges, and houses 19 of the country's National Cultural treasures in its halls and museums. The history dates to 529 when the Great Monk Ado commenced building which continued for over 200 years, although it has been expanded and restored after war and fires had destroyed part of the grounds.

The kilometre, scenic walk through the lush mountain valley, 300-year-old wild tea forests, stone basins and ponds, and past the renowned Seungseongyo Bridge to reach the grounds is part of the experience. Visiting is delightful all year round, but particularly lovely in Spring when the old apricot trees are bursting with blossoms or in Autumn, when the valley is painted with yellow, oranges and red leaves.
