High in the Andes and flanked by three mammoth, misty-peaked volcanoes, Arequipa may be Peru’s second city, but it has a personality and ambiance unlike anywhere else in the country. Nicknamed the Ciudad Blanca (White City), Arequipa’s historic centre is dotted with beautiful baroque buildings constructed from white volcanic rock from the surrounding mountains. UNESCO-listed, it is a delight to wander! Outside the city, Arequipa’s surroundings are also suitably spectacular, filled with soaring peaks, valleys, canyons and lakes.
