It is said that Buddha visited Mandalay Hill and prophesised that a great city would be built at its foot. The hill today, from which that great city of culture takes its name, is a major pilgrimage spot for Burma’s Buddhists, many travellers joining them for the views from the summit, especially at sunset. For the energetic climb one of the staircases to the top, passing temples, shrines and souvenir stalls as you go. There is a pagoda at the top from where you can survey the city and Mandalay plain, and take some time to watch and interactive with the friendly local pilgrims.
