Big Almaty Lake

Celebrating 25 Years of tour excellence

Take in the serene beauty of the most famous lake in Kazakhstan, a natural alpine reservoir surrounded by high peaks of the Alatau mountains. As refreshing as it looks, you cannot swim as it is the primary water source for Almaty residents, and is guarded. Its proximity to the Kyrgyz border is another reason for the guards.

The lake's teal hue varies in colour depending on the time of the year, but it is at its brightest and most turquoise in September while during Spring it becomes milky due to melting snow. The lake is the result of many earthquakes, lying 2511 meters above sea level and the Almaty River runs through it. Made up of glacier water, with the average temperature is between 8 – 10 degrees.

Its beautiful location, breath-taking views and magnificent scenery is a must-see.
