The city of Kamaishi is located in the northeast of Honshu, in Iwate Prefecture. The city itself is the birthplace of Japan’s modern iron industry and home to a UNESCO World-heritage listed blast furnace, whilst the prefecture is known for its spectacular Pacific coastline.
Rugged and wave-battered, Iwate’s coast has dramatic cliffs, beaches, sand dunes and secluded natural ports, meaning that it is a fantastic place to eat seafood. Inland is tracts of forest, soaring peaks and plenty of rural culture – with all this great outdoors, Iwate Prefecture is a must explore for lovers of the great outdoors!
