The picturesque landscapes of East Java are known for their surreal beauty, but most memorable of them all is the surreal Mt Bromo, an active volcano rising 2329 metres high and flanked by a number of sister volcanoes. The area around it is known as the Sea of Sand – a vast plain of volcanic black sand punctuated by the peaks.
The best view of Bromo can be had from the viewpoint on neighbouring Mount Penanjakan – ascend by Jeep for unforgettable views of the region at sunrise, before driving through the Sea of Sand to reach Bromo itself. The last 245 steps must be taken on foot, but adventurers will be rewarded with a glimpse into the crater itself.
